KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 (ES) - A Pakatan Rakyat (Pakatan) parliamentary member (MP) told the august house on May 8 that the coalition will soon form the federal government but a senior ruling party MP dismissed the possibility.

”We are certain that the second phase of the political tsunami will happen anytime soon,” People Justice Party (PKR) parliamentary member Azmin Ali told a convening house.

In a speech to debate the Royal Address, Azmin who is also PKR vice president, said the encouragement and support from “our friends” and the people would ensure that the coalition would be able to form the federal government.

Several quarters had expressed the possibility of Pakatan forming government in September.

The Pakatan coalition comprises of Islamic Party of Malaysia (PAS), the Democratic Action Party (DAP) and PKR currently controlled 82 seats in the 222 seat parliamentary house.

PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had said over 30 MPs from the ruling coalition had expressed interest to cross over to enable the Pakatan coalition to oust current National Front (BN) ruling coalition headed by embattled Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi.

Azmin’s assertion came against a backdrop of expressed concern by former Prime Minister Tun Mahathir Mohamad on May 7 of such a possibility.

However former Finance Minister Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, who is also the ruling coalition MP from Gua Musang rejected such a possibility.

“BN is not unstable,” he told a mob of journalists at the Parliament lobby.

Told that BN were perceived as such, Razaleigh said it was just a “matter of perception”.

Asked that the Pakatan Rakyat would be able to wrest control of the Federal government, Razaleigh replied: “I hope not”.

DAP secretary general Lim Guan Eng, who is also Penang Chief Minister and Bagan parliamentary member declined to comment on Azmin’s assertion.

“I have no comment,” he told journalists at parliament lobby. – Saadon Aksah/ES
